Analysts have compared the AIDS situation in Uttar Pradesh to the tip of a massive iceberg just showing itself on the water's surface. Indeed, this metaphor is accurate in several respects. The growing danger of AIDS in Uttar Pradesh and the need for strong efforts on two fronts - the education/awareness and the testing and counselling front - have spurred the organisation to conduct awareness programme on AIDS prevention under Mother NGO scheme of RCH programme in Kanpur Nagar and Kanpur Dehat districts, Utthan project under PACS project in Kanpur Dehat, Fatehpur, Hamirpur, Jalaun, Banda and Unnao districts.
In these districts HIV/AIDS is spreading at a rapid pace and is fast taking the shape of epidemic due to lack of awareness, use of drugs and increased trafficking of women and girls for sexual purposes. It is moving from high risk groups to the general population and from urban areas to rural areas. The reasons for this fast increase is high rate of sexual infections, lesser or no use of condoms, migration from low to high prevalence states/countries and high level of ignorance and sexual promiscuity among young people.
Awareness creation among the community has an important role to play in HIV prevention, treatment and care. There are several ways through which awareness can be generated among the public. Through this project the organisation has been seeking assistance for implementing programmes for generating awareness on prevention of HIV/AIDS. |
